Homemade Cornbread Recipe

Golden, buttery, and slightly sweet, this homemade cornbread is a classic comfort food that pairs perfectly with soups, stews, or just a generous pat of butter and honey. Made with simple pantry ingredients, it’s quick to prepare and absolutely delicious!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cornmeal

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/3 cup melted butter

  • 1 tablespoon butter or bacon grease (for greasing the skillet)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). If using a cast-iron skillet, place it in the oven while it heats.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, honey (or sugar), baking powder, and salt.

  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter until well combined.

  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined—don’t overmix!

  5. If using a cast-iron skillet, carefully remove it from the oven and grease it with butter or bacon grease.

  6. Pour the batter into the skillet or a greased baking dish and spread evenly.

  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  8. Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam!

Tips for the Best Cornbread:

✔️ Use buttermilk for a richer, more tender texture. ✔️ A cast-iron skillet creates the best crispy crust. ✔️ Add corn kernels, jalapeños, or cheese for a fun twist.
